Vishwakarma- The Divine Draftsman

Ancient Hindu texts has many references to Vishwakarma as the architect of the Gods.  Images of the the God Vishwakarma represent him with four hands, wearing a crown and gold jewelry……. he holds a water-pot, a book, a noose and craftsman’s tools in his hands.

Hindu mythology is full of Vishwakarma’s many architectural wonders. It is said that in the “Satya yuga”, the God Viswakarma built the Swarg Loka, or heaven the abode of the Gods and Demigods. He is also creditied to have built the Golden Lanka for Ravana, Dwarka, the capital of Lord Krishna, Hastinapur, the capital of Kauravas and Pandavas and Indraprastha for the Pandavas.

The Ellora caves pays tribute to Vishwakarma by the construction of a separate cave cut out of solid rock. The cave is filled with intricate carvings and sculptures….. truly the work of craftsmen with superior skills.

The community of Vishwakarma today are artisans like carpenters, blacksmiths, bell metalworkers, goldsmiths and stonemasons. The community believe that they are descendants of Vishwakarma, the Hindu deity.
